Well.. I think this is only an emotional letter, not a real one. See, if you want change, from where should it start? Right from you. If I want change, first I should change. You want to see a world without selfishness, start being non-selfish. Start presenting NEWS as it is than to project it insensibly and create furore, like many of your articles project everyday.
Y are we after the politicians? Didnt we elect them? Whom should we be really after? You and I! Well, am not anti-congress, but not pro-communalists either.
Of the two demons, we are always left with the choice of selecting the less troublesome demon.
I believe, this is not the failure of the politicians, but the failure of individuals at large. Failure of the policeman who patrols during night time on the seashore, the individuals who do brokerage business and who produce fake identities in return for money, the failure of the general public who would instead prefer bribing the vulnerable policeman to get away with their lawlessness, the failure of again general public who bribe and give black money to these middlemen in return for their aspirations/ desires. Accusing the prime minister of being led by one person, is just biased and unethical from a person placed in such a responsible position of being the editor of a news portal.
Whenever something like this happens, we always look for scapegoats instead of standing up to say, we'll make sure we will follow the system in place so that law breakers can be identified easily. Everyone in this country breaks the law, so, how do you identify the dark spots when everything is black?
Mr. Editor, I appreciate the fact that you have refused to pay in black and thus have foregone whatever you wanted to buy, but have you as a responsible citizen taken the person who demanded money in black to the protectors of law? Well, even if you didnt have any faith in the law and system in place, you should've done a sting operation atleast to help the government.
At the end of the day, we all should realise that our responsibility doesnt end after clicking the voting button, but instead it just starts from there.

that was very brilliantly articulated. now, if only our economist sardarji would - or could - do something about it...there's a lot of anger out there amongst the "mice" of India - but we must all squeak up together...from this groundswell of angst must rise some leaders, some selfless "servants" of the people, some bravehearts who can think about being Indian first and take concrete steps to make it a secure country to live in...

Well said, Moses...I know where you are coming from. Even I've paid bribe once in a while (and am now repenting it)..we've gotten into a culture of accept-bribery-as-a-way-of-life. but we are now discovering that it's a way of death too..nevertheless blaming any single individual right now is not enough - all those who masterminded the attacks must be caught and punished - along with those who helped them in any way...we as citizens now must hold our politicians, media and others in the position of power to high standards of ethics, behaviour, honesty and demand that they meet their promises and do their jobs really, really well

well articulated Mr. Bajaj. I feel you are pretty much in a powerful position to bring about the change. in fact if you take the stride to publish stuff thats unbiased but the fact remains you wont be able to stand that long if were ever to take such a stance. But we surely need a dictator has honest as Mahatma Gandhi but stubborn as Hitler to change things overnight...

God! i really pray that our PM reads this...and more importantly ACTS on it. it is high time we need CHANGE!!!

I really appreciate your work, but do you really think that our PM and other politicians will listen this & change their selves?
I don't doubt but I am 101% sure that our politicians won't change. You might have heard that "Kutte ki dum tedhi ki tedhi hi raheti hai" that most suitable for our politician.
Shame on you politicians, shame on you.

I read each and every single letter of your word Sir.But, I am sure that Mr.Prime Minister going to give it a cold shoulder and all what you expressed to Mr.Prime Minister will be gone in air and you will find or I would say, we will found ourselves again in the same stage from where we just came back cursing and opposing politicians.As you mentioned in your letter to Mr.Prime Minister to being a real SARDAR, Sir at this context I would really want to say to be real SARDAR, firstly he has to come out all of the boundation of Congress Party or I would say home governed Gandhi Party. Sir, i believe now the time is over for Mr.Prime Minister to come out make CBI freehand agency or give army or police a freehold,I feel India also need its Che Guvera to get all equal rights and freedom from terrorism.Mr.Editor, even stayin far away from India here in US, my blood is boiling every single second for thie heinous act of terrorist, but Sir, dont you feel somewhere firstly, we need to eradicate terrorist from our homes for example:Kerala Chief Minister,V.S Achyutanandan who abuses Major Sandeep UnniKrishnan's family sayin "Dog Wouldn't have visited there place, if that wouldn't have been Major Sandeep's house".Is, Mr.Chief Minister's ego was so high in front of the major blow faced by Major Sandeep's family.Everyone talks about resilience, Did this Chief Minister of God's own land, showed any resilience for parents of martyr son.Sir, I am very much in accord to your statement about the corruption in Mumbai,its the problem of every state, but I think, I representing youth of India, needs to change the government, we need to put step in it to change the face of india, Sir, i would like to make request to you put pressure through your column and media on government firstly to nuke those minister of minister figures like Bal Thackeray and Raj Thackeray who are spitting the venom of being marathi and mumbaikar, May I ask anyone, those commando's who came from Manesar and laid there lives on the path of duty, did they ask to whom they goin to protect.Did any of the bullet ask for people are you mumbaikar or north indian or south indian, In my own country people are enemy to each other because of different sides of country.Firstly, we need to sack our ministers and got those people in front to lead who knows one thing, for any action against india, reaction will be disastrous.We have shown enough resilience, but we also know strike and also brutal strike.I am ready to kill myself for my country, but only for my people for those people who just know everyone as indian not as mumbaikar, delhiite, or north indian and not for politician.Editor Sir,I would like to make request to you, if you read this blog to convey my message to all politicians who think they are God, we already have shown enough tears, we cried alot, but its not indian people's weakness its just our affection to native land,and to our people, but we also know how to strike back, if indian government wouldn't do anything which satisfy youth, then being a representative of youth of India, we can cause much more harm and much disaster to those who looked at our land.We are engineers, doctors,architect full of anger and pain, what we can think and could do, will put these millitants in quandry whom they are facing off.So,my request to you is to convey message to government either do something soon which makes us feel we took revenge, otherwise that time is not very far in which you will see engineer or doctor or architect or any intelligent youth working out there way to save his home INDIA.

very well said, but every one is good at speaking...thats what is done by our politicians....nobody's work speak for them...
there is corruption in every country, but nobody is so corrupted that , the moment they come to power they forget all abt people who bought them to power and instead start sucking all outta them...
its a good thing to see citizens reacting this way, but it was a costly affair i must say.
Did we need this Massacre to wake up....and if we have woken up...how long are we gonna stand b4 u lose our hope and give up again ???
its all a lot more complicated and dodgy then it appears to be

A nice letter but i feel you forgot to mention one thing.
- remove all the security off all the politicians no cars nothing. Save precious Tax-payers money.Let them travel in the same train , stand in the same Q to buy tickets. Let them catch the same BEST bus and buy 2Rs ticket.
Than you will see that there will be no bomb blast, never and the quality of everything will improve.
JUST TRY ANS SEE THE DIFFERENCE.

Well, I have watched the pictures and videos of the mayhem created by the terrorists and am equally grieved to see those horrifying pictures. Interestingly, if you have observed, there were atleast a dozen policemen, may have been of the Railway Protection Force or general Home guards. What was shocking to me was that they were one the very first to have run off the station premises. I was wondering why they did so when they actually join their service with an oath to protect the soverignity of the country and also protect the citizens. I then realised that all of them were carrying only lathis in their hands. They were not equipped enough to handle the situation. If at all they have to face the terrorists, it would be only like a suicide and not even an ioata of an effort to save people.

Now, most of us would be very quick to say that the system doesn't permit a constable to carry a gun. The system permits a licensed gun holder to shoot anyone who endangers his life. Now, if the constable had been carrying a gun, he probably would have been able to take atleast a shot or two at the terrorist and coupled with God's grace, those terrorists could have been nabbed right there. However, even in the wake of so many attacks, we are still not in a position to provide our constables with guns, why? Simply because we dont have guns!

Why is it that we dont have guns, we cant buy them. Each gun costs around about 100,000.00 rupees and from where can the government get so much of money to equip a police force of say 100,000 men (rough figure on an average. I heard UP has 150,000) when most of its citizens dont care to pay taxes.

For every problem, the root cause lies with us. Out of the taxable population in India, 50% avoid taxes by paying insurance, investing in stocks, donating to charitable trusts (this is a bigger issue, as most people just generate receipts but dont donate in reality) and of the remaining 50%, half of them dont pay taxes and the remaining half earnestly pay taxes.

We are so much stuck in this habit of TAKE that we have completely forgotten how to GIVE. We go about taking homeloans, education loans and invest in a lot to save ourselves from simple little Taxes. If we really see, we pay out a lot in order to protect that very little amount that is going out to the government.

The Govt/ the system in their endeavor to see its citizen rich and happy provide all kinds of sops& benefits. We as citizens, not only take those sops but also take advantage of the lenience and go a step ahead to not pay even a pie to the government.

I would now say, let those who diligently pay taxes only stand up and say, why have you not been able to protect me? The answer would be, your brother who lives in your neighbourhood didnt pay anything and I do not show any partiality in my services, so it got shared on everyone and so the cover got weakened.

I'm not against those who are avoiding taxes by simply investing in a lot of options available in the market, but I'm very strongly against those who generate fake receipts which say that they invested in such and such things and are eligible for tax waiver.

To be honest with you, I never ever read a blog. Yesterday's blog was my first one and as soon as I read it, I thought I should write a comment.

I have also read the blog of Mr. Amitab Bachan after going thru this blog to the Primeminister, he was talking about his feelings, his pain towards the city and all that.
If am not mistaken, I have recently read in a newspaper that he has not paid his income tax dues yet. If the reports have not been proven false, he had also bought a land by registering himself as a farmer. See, these petty little things may seem very petty to us, but thats the bread and butter for the government to run this country.

If a person who earns crores and crores of rupees cannot cough up a lakh (rough estimate) as service charges to buy a land, how can you expect an average Indian to be honest and upright?

Our tax consultants earn more than we do in their efforts to help us pay very little to the government.

I would only say one thing, if you have been diligent enough in paying taxes and following the system, please stand up and question the government. Otherwise, ask yourself what you can do for the country.

Listen to your heart when you vote, and pay your taxes. You can elect the right leaders and also demand right protection.

Just wanted to clarify that my intention is that all the policemen should be allowed to carry hand guns, revolvers or pistols. I also acknowledge and salute the sacrifices made by the policemen who died in this attack. I wish they were more equipped than they are right now.

I do not want to comment much on either the letter or on any of the comments but I would like to say one thing as the Indian citizen.

We as Indians always feel proud about our nation. Is it not giving us a hint that we should behave as one body?
If that is true each part in our nation should feel the pain that the other part suffers... If that is true each one of us should raise our voices with pain when anything happens to other part of the nation... If that is true we should have raised our voices right from the years when there were religious conflicts going on... when some part/community of India had raised to take revenge on some other part/community of the same country... when some so called patriots raised and demolished temples, mosques and churches and killed many innocent people in the name of religion(we knew what happened recently in Orissa, past in Gujarat and in other parts of the nation).
But we have kept quite watching everything in silence. Somewhere in our mind we were comfortable saying to our self, "This has to do nothing with me, I am happy as long as I am safe" And now when the problem comes to us, we are screaming with pain and try to blame every one for this pain.

Dear fellow citizens of India, are we not behaving selfishly over all these issues. Just try to answer you inner conscience. Did we ever behave like we the Indians are different parts of the same body/Nation?

If we, being different parts of the same body/Nation, fight against each other, we should not wonder if the enemy comes and adds its hand to us to suppress us.

Lets learn lessons from what had happened to us, at least now and try to stop fighting against each other and let us be united.

Remember the saying, "Any kingdom which is divided with in itself, can not with stand"

Situations have become so bad around us that no one need to come separately to kill us but we do it for ourselves in the name of taking revenges and establishing our so called religious beliefs.

So please stop blaming the shift on some one or other and lets introspect ourselves and take away the differences to be as one body to prove the whole world that we are one. Then no one would ever dare to come on us to suppress us.

Finally just think about how strong it would be if the world largest democracy is really united as one body and as one Nation. Hope some one who reads this would at least understand what I am saying and tell some other to see India united. Lets not be emotional patriots but operational patriots. Jaihind.

"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me."

From an Article in Times of India: Official records show that for a force of well over 1.8 lakh, the home department procured a meagre 2,221 weapons — 577 for Mumbai, and 1,644 for the rest of Maharashtra.
As per the police manual, officials ranking from constable to assistant inspector get rifles with 30 rounds each, and those with the rank of police sub-inspector and above get revolvers, also with 30 rounds each.
As per the rules, every district should have a firing range exclusively for the police. But official records indicate that more than half the state’s districts have no independent firing range.
‘‘We have constables who have not opened fire even for practice ever since their recruitment,’’ the official said.

well said sir ,thats what we needed,V can't fight against foreign terrorist unless we clean up these antinationals( politicians),if u see, these people are people who first divided our country North indians ,south indians,Later they separated us by religion,caste ,later the separated us marathians,Madrasis,gurjaris etc these division never ended.

If u go statewise u can see further division.

These politicians never solved any issues.But the are the one who fueled these issues so that they can have political gains.for example if u take Cavery river issue both karnataka or tamilnadu government had done nothing to improve the level of water or stop encrochment in the cachment areas,But these people are creating enmity among both state people.
so its better v have military rule than these people rule

The are only persons in India who don't like the word "Unity".

@Moses

You said we as educated masses should go and vote... the question is TO WHOM? All the parties have underworld dons turned netas, loosers who end up in politics.. Who do we vote?
A single person who is honest cannot change the whole system, he will end up being killed/kicked out/will turn corrupt himself.
What we need now is making of a political party full of intellectuals, patriots and this should come into power!

Amitava Roy said...

It is interesting to see so many contrasting views on the one topic. Well that is India. We are more tolerant that others so we are ready to be killed by terrorists in hundreds. We are ready to give up our land to others so we are call for dialogue with the invaders. We are so humble that we request other countries to hand over their precious criminals to us so that we can make a decade long legal battle and will be waiting for another hijack. Well that is India, a tolerant India, a forgiving India and so on.

Every sentence written by Mr. Bajaj is apt. I will say the Prime Minister and all the political fraternity should now rethink their strategies. Instead of playing cast, religion & state politics they must think of the country. We are Indians & if we do not protect our motherland it is a national shame.

Dear Sir,

The above letter indicates that your Newspaper supports a Political party (everyone knows which one) while is it not the duty of the Media not be partial towards any political party whether it be the BJP, the JD (S) or the Congress Party. The media should be own its own without leaning to one or the other party. While your Newspaper (Times of India) have indicated the drawbacks of the Congress Party, is the BJP far behind from the number of scams and a number of other things!! The prohibiting of Media persons from entering the Metro Rail premises and taking of photographs of it shows the BJP in poor light. Water shortage, power shortage, murder, rape, infrequent transport system, no parks for children to play, improper waste collections, bad roads, loss of greenery cover have been the so-called boons of the BJP party too to the citizens of Motherland India.

As soon as a new Chief Minister takes over, a number of visits are taken to the temples rather than visiting the people living in that city or state and looking into the welfare of those people. Moreover it’s really shocking to see media persons banned from entering the Metro Rail premises and prohibiting them from taking photographs. Not only this, the city and the state have been subjected to a number of power cuts. Increase in prices of Dairy products shows a leaning towards vegetarians by the party whereas the choice needs to be left to the individual if he wants to be a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian.

Here it is also necessary to bring to your attention that the Right to Property had been abolished where the Bharatiya Jananta Party had been a party to this too where the males have not been the losers but the women of our own Motherland, India as whenever the division of property takes place whether it belongs to the male or the female, in both cases it goes to the males rather than to the female counterpart of that family and thus the females occupy the backstage every time.
Therefore no party has been ever accountable to its policies and programs and what we do need today is accountability of every political party on every decision they undertake as we are a ‘Democratic country and not a Dictatorship one!!
